Our Environment

CLIMATE AND CLEAN ENERGY

At Deckers, all of our brands aim to use our combined scale to fight climate change—by reducing our energy impact in our offices, decreasing our travel footprint, utilizing preferred raw materials in our products and packaging, and working with our supply chain partners to reduce energy consumption. We know that energy is the largest contributor to climate change, so we use renewable energy whenever possible. For more info about our climate and energy goals, please see our Corporate Responsibility Report.

CARBON AND GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

The fashion industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The energy required to produce raw materials and assemble products has a large impact on our environment. To offset this, we work with raw material suppliers to source materials with lower greenhouse gas emissions and/or work with our supply chain partners to reduce their overall energy usage. Moving the majority of our production from China to Vietnam was a huge step forward in reducing our environmental footprint. (China relies heavily on coal, while Vietnam utilizes hydroelectricity, which, alone, reduces our overall footprint, significantly). We also recognize the opportunity to reduce other significant air emissions. Our Restricted Substances Policy sets forth our expectations of our supply chain partners when using substances that are known to have an environmental impact. We regularly review our policies to ensure we are up-to-date on all legal restrictions, and provide ongoing training and monitoring of our partners so that they are aware of our stringent requirements. See our Corporate Responsibility Report for more info.

WATER

Water is essential. There are no substitutes for water. So we must do everything we can to protect this precious resource. Admittedly, the fashion, apparel and footwear industry uses a lot of fresh water, and we must all do our part to reduce, purify and protect it wherever possible. Our corporate offices have water mitigation programs in place, and we see the savings every day. We also encourage our supply chain partners to reduce their water usage, and monitor many of our Tier 1 and Tier 2 partners’ water usage and purification efforts. We only want to work with those partners who take environmental impact mitigation as seriously as we do, and we continue to drive our partners to do better. We are studying ways to reduce our raw materials water usage/contamination while supporting organizations who are protecting our waterways and oceans. Read through our Corporate Responsibility Report for more info.

WASTE

We strive to reduce waste and to avoid landfill or incineration without energy recovery. Rivers collectively dump about 2.75 million metric tons of waste into the ocean annually. A large amount of waste is comprised of microplastics, which are tiny pieces of broken-down plastics that are smaller than a fingernail. Ten distinct rivers, located in Asia and Africa, are thought to carry about 93% of the trash that is eventually found in our oceans. We manufacture primarily in Asia and are committed to doing our part to engage our global partners on proper waste management. At our corporate offices, we’re taking steps to eliminate single use plastics and utilizing technology to create less waste. We are committed to ensuring that our Moreno Valley distribution center is a zero-waste facility by 2027. We also monitor waste generation and waste diversion among the majority of our key supply chain partners. We are committed to doing our part to reduce our waste generation, and use the best diversion methods available. In 2017, we completed our packaging materials lifecycle assessment and have saved millions of pounds of packaging through our efforts. We look forward to completing our product materials lifecycle assessment to further prioritize materials, reduce waste, and improve our manufacturing processes. For more waste info please see our Corporate Responsibility Report.
